News Update: Fatal hit-and-run suspect turns himself over to police
Jalen Thomas, 21, was driving a Kia Cadenza west on Tropicana on Tropicana Ave when he changed lanes and hit Charles Waid. The collision damaged Thomas’s vehicle, causing it to leave debris on the roadway. Waid then fled the area.
First responders were called to the scene of the accident and pronounced Waid dead around 7:05 p.m.
Thomas told officers he fled after the crash because he wished to see his daughter before being arrested. Thomas’s mother convinced him to turn himself and drove him to the crash site at about 7:45 p.m.
Police conducted a field sobriety test and collected a blood sample before apprehending Thomas.
Thomas posted bail on Tuesday. He is due back into court on Oct 12.
