News update: Engineer blames wind storm for awning collapse that injured 4 at La Bonita
According to La Bonita officials, 50-60 people were inside the supermarket when the collapse happened on August 13. At least one person was trapped underneath the awning. A total of four people were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Clark County ordered the supermarket to close following the collapse. They also required the property owner to hire an engineer to identify the cause of the incident and assess the safety of the structure before reopening the store.
La Bonita hired engineer Bradley Severson of Kimley-Horn and Associates to identify the cause of the collapse. In a letter to Clark County, Severson said that a windstorm caused the damage to the supermarket on August 13.
Clark County did not investigate the incident themselves, though they may do so in the future. Stacey Welling, a spokesperson for Clark County, said in an email, “In the event, we question the result of a submitted report, we can request a peer review from a consultant selected by the County,”
